Alden C. Palmgren

WORCESTER - Alden C. Palmgren, 87, of Worcester died peacefully on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home with his children by his side. Alden’s life was guided by a devotion to his family, faith and community. His wife, Shirley, to whom he was married 51 years, passed away in 2006. He leaves two sons, Mark and his wife, Susan of Astoria, NY; John and his wife, Cindybeth of Worcester; two daughters, Anne Deedy and her husband, Daniel of Worcester; Kathleen Copson and her husband, Donald of Framingham; and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Palmgren of Holden. His son, David predeceased him in 2003. Alden leaves as well six adored and adoring grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah and Katherine Palmgren, Michael and Timothy Deedy, and Abigail Palmgren.



He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Palmgren of Worcester. Two brothers, Roger (Worcester) and Russell (New Hope, PA), and three sisters, Elizabeth Neville (Winthrop), Grace Hunt (Shrewsbury) and Mae Palmgren (Worcester) predeceased him. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and two dear friends of his later years, Sandra Johnson and Michael Martin.



Alden was born in Worcester in 1927, the son of Andrew and Alinda (Johnson) Palmgren. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS Flint in the South Pacific. He was a graduate of Commerce High School and was awarded his Associate’s degree from Worcester Junior College in 1950. For 39 years he was employed as a sales engineer for Wyman-Gordon Company, retiring in 1990.



He was a member of the Tatnuck Club, First Friday Club, Greendale Retirement Club, Boys & Girls Club of Worcester and the YMCA. He served on the board of directors of the Junior Achievement program. Alden participated in numerous activities at Christ the King Church of which he was a long time parishioner, including serving as chairman of the Bishop’s Fund, co-chairman with his wife of its youth group (CYC), and president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He also served the church for many years as a Eucharistic Minister, lector and member of its Parish Council.



The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Rose Monahan Hospice Home for their exemplary dedication and compassion.



Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 6, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 7, in Christ The King Church, Worcester. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. In lieu of flowers, Alden and his family request donations be made either to the CYC at Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester, MA 01602 or to the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, 10 Judith Road, Worcester, MA 01602.
