RUTLAND – Albina F. (Barre) Cormick, 93, died peacefully on June 12, 2013 at the Holden Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was born in Yonkers, NY, the daughter of Gaston and Albina (Hofbauer) Barre and lived 16 years in Paris, France and over 60 years in Rutland.
While in France, she received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Grenoble and worked as an English/French secretary for the United Nations Relief & Rehabilitation in Paris. Returning to the U.S. in 1946, she worked in the business office of the former Rutland State Sanatorium, then in the bursar’s office at W.P.I. and later as a bilingual secretary to the president of Assumption College. She obtained her Massachusetts Teaching Certificate and her master’s degree from Assumption College. Albina was a French teacher in the Worcester secondary schools for 35 years before retiring in 1990. She was awarded the Medal of Knight of Academic Palmsby by the French Ministry of Education in Paris in 1983 for her outstanding teaching of the French language and culture to her American Students; named to the National Reference Institute’s Who’s Who in American Education from 1983 thru 1990 for her significant accomplishments and leadership.
Albina belonged to the National Education Association, the Massachusetts, National and Foreign Language Teachers of French Associations. She was also a member of Assumption College Alumni Association, the Worcester Business & Professional Women’s Club, the Rutland Historical Society, and was a member of St. Patrick’s Church where she sang in the choir for 25 years and was active in the Women’s Guild.
Her husband, Jean F. Cormick died in January, 2001. She is survived by her grandson, Michael J. Szaban of Rutland; her great-grandchildren, John, Matthew and Hannah Szaban all of Virginia; 5 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Elaine Suchocki of Rutland; and 6 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her only daughter, Jacqueline Szaban in 1980 and her brother, the Rev. Gaston Barre, who died in France in 1990.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 17, at St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Interment will follow at Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
