Alberto Sbacchi

LANCASTER – Alberto Sbacchi, 68, of 156 Center Bridge Road, died peacefully at home on Thursday, September 14, 2006, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 43 years, Margareta E. (Karlman) Sbacchi; his son, Paul E. Sbacchi and his wife Rebecca of Nottingham, New Hampshire; a daughter, Ingrid F. Bairstow and her husband Tim of Leavensworth, Kansas; his mother, Franca (Mariano) Sbacchi of Palermo, Italy; a brother, Giuseppe Sbacchi of Palermo, Italy; and four grandchildren, Hannah, Natalia, Alex and Isabella. He was born in Palermo, Italy, the son of the late Enrico Sbacchi. At age 23 he immigrated to the U.S. and has lived 30 years in Lancaster.

Dr. Sbacchi earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Illinois. He was a Professor of History at Atlantic Union College for 27 years, retiring in 2001. Dr. Sbacchi was inducted as a knight of the prestigious Cavaliere dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Knighthood of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic) for his outstanding contribution to Italian culture and scholarship. He authored six books, numerous articles and was considered one of the world’s leading experts on the Italian Empire and Italy’s involvement in Ethiopia.

The funeral service for Dr. Sbacchi will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, in The Seventh-Day Adventist College Church, 337 Main Street, South Lancaster. Burial will be private in Eastwood Cemetery, Old Common Road, Lancaster. Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling, is directing arrangements.
