RUTLAND – Albert F. Scales, Jr., 90, of 174 Main Street died on Saturday, January 29, 2005 in his home after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 65 years, Phyllis M. (Anderson) Scales; a son, David C. and his wife Patricia A. Scales of Rutland; three daughters, Jean E. and her husband Robert L. Bigelow of Rutland, Lea Anne and her husband Timothy G. Kelley of Jefferson, and Susan J. and her husband Gary J. Liimatainen of Rutland; a brother, Fred Scales of Oakdale; eleven grandchildren, Linda Hetu, Darren, Lynn and Brian Kelley, Jeffrey and Elizabeth Scales, Derek, Greg, Klondie, Scott and Steve Liimatainen; four great-grandchildren, Jodi and Mark LaBoffa, Michael and Jamie Hetu; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, John and Frank Scales, predeceased him. He was born in Lowell, son of Albert F. and Annie (Gilbody) Scales, and lived 60 years in Rutland.
Mr. Scales co-owned and operated Scales Brothers Artesian Wells in Rutland for many years. He was later the superintendent of the Rutland Department of Public Works for 10 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland, Rutland Historical Society, Rutland Grange, a 63 year member of the Boylston Lodge of Masons in West Boylston, West Boylston Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Rifle Association and a former Commander of the Rutland Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a 20-year member of the Rutland Finance Committee.
Mr. Scales was a Navy Veteran of World War II and served aboard the U.S.S. Midas in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and collecting glass insulators and bottles.
The funeral service for Mr. Scales will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Spring burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Rutland. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The Boylston Lodge of Masons will conduct a Ritual Service Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rutland Lion’s Club, P.O. Box 626, Rutland, MA 01543.
