Biography
HOLDEN – Albert G. Ferron, 84, formerly of Appletree Lane, died on Monday, April 7, 2014 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence, RI. He was born in Southbridge, the son of Albert L. and Eva (Menard) Ferron.
His wife of 46 years, Lillian J. (Frissora) Ferron, died in June of 2000. He leaves three sons, David Ferron of Worcester, George Ferron and his wife, Lee of Ballston Spa, NY and Richard Ferron and his wife, Patricia of Smithfield, RI; five grandchildren, Jillian, Michael, Scott, Steven, and Timothy; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Lucille Blain.
Al graduated from Assumption High School and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, both in Worcester and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.
He was a vice president and part owner of Alden Research Laboratory in Holden, retiring in 1992 after working 35 years. He also taught engineering at WPI for 45 years. He was on the board of directors of Colony Retirement Homes, Inc. and the Holden Council on Aging, was a standardize patient at UMass Medical School, member of the Holden Water Sewer Advisory Committee, member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Sigma Xi, and Pi Tau Sigma. His past town activities included trustee of Damon Memorial Library, member of the School Building, School Facility and Wachusett Regional School District Committees. He had also been active in youth programs including Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and Pop Warner football. At one time his professional activities included chairman of Worcester section of ASME, chairman of the Hydraulic Section of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers, secretary of the Technical Committee 4 of the International Electrotechnical Commission, and member of the International Association of Hydraulic Research.
Al was a strong supporter of the Holden schools. He was a member of St. George’s Church having been a teacher in the CCD program, lector, and minister of Holy Communion. He received the Good Neighbor award from the Holden Democratic Town Committee in 2008 and the Lifetime Achievement award from the Holden Council on Aging in 2009. His greatest joys included being with family, fishing, gardening and playing card games.
A calling hour will be held from 9 – 10 a.m. at St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 12.
