HOLDEN - CSM Alan “Skip” R. Twichell, 86, of Holden, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 under the loving care of his family and the staff at Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester. Born and raised in Worcester, Skip was the son of Arthur G. and Bessie E. (McConnell) Twichell and lived 63 years in Holden.
He leaves his wife, Loretta C. (Carlstrom) Twichell; four daughters, Lynn T. Drawbridge of Columbus, Ohio, Dale T. Hickey and her husband, Brian of Holden, Kym T. Deckard and Kevin Maloney of Worcester and Abby T. Scott and her husband, Jon of Holden; a stepdaughter, Heidi J. Atherton and her husband, David of Somerville; 20 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and his lifetime friend, Charles “Terry” Crathern of New Hampshire. Skip’s first wife and mother of his four daughters, Marilyn (Drawbridge) Twichell died in 1998. His second wife, Carol (Moore) Cherry Twichell died in 2005. He also leaves his beloved dog, Pep.
Skip graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester and Northeastern University in Boston with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. He worked as an industrial engineer for over 35 years at Bay State Abrasives in Westborough retiring in 1988. Skip honorably served his country for over 40 years with the Massachusetts National Guard, retiring as a Command Sargent Major. Skip also served as a firefighter for the town of Holden for several years.
He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Holden, the Worcester County Model A Club, and Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons. At the age 50, Skip fulfilled a lifelong dream and took flying lessons and earned his private pilot’s license. He was an extreme outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and sailing with his friends. His hobbies included ham radios, tinkering around the house, and working on his Model A. Skip was a history buff and was a member of the Civil War Round Table. He particularly enjoyed studying the Civil War and visiting the Gettysburg Pennsylvania area. He will be remembered as a dependable and hard-working family man.
Skip’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the “hospice team” and support staff at the VNA Care Network and Hospice for their care and compassion they provided over the last several months.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Skip’s family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service honoring his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 18, at the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main St., Holden. Burial will be private in Grove Cemetery.
