RUTLAND – Alan J. Charlonne, 50, of Rutland, MA passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at UMass Memorial Healthcare – University Campus after a courageous battle with thymic carcinoma. Born in Peterborough, NH and raised in Jaffrey, NH, Alan was the son of Joseph F. and Cynthia A. (Blouin) Charlonne and lived in 16 years in Rutland.
He leaves his wife of 18 years, Jennifer A. (Kelly) Charlonne; their five children, Brittany M., Nicholas J., Abby C., Alex R., and Lydia K. Charlonne all of Rutland; his mother, Cynthia A. (Blouin) Charlonne of Jaffrey; a brother, Mark Charlonne and his husband, Wayne of Spofford, NH; a sister, Lori DeBanico and her husband, Marc of Grantham, NH; many nephews and nieces.
Alan graduated from Conant High School in Jaffrey and Keene State College in Keene, NH with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. He started his career as a bond underwriter in the insurance industry working for Peerless Insurance Co., in Keene. He later worked at Penn National Insurance Co. in Greensboro, NC, Hanover Insurance Co. in Worcester, MA and most recently, at NGM Insurance Company where he was a Contract Surety Account Management Executive for the last 10 years.
Alan was a wonderful husband and an active and loving father to his five kids. He loved to attend baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball games cheering on his kids and socializing with the crowd. He always had a smile on and loved to greet people with the phrase “Howdy”. His positive spirit was infectious.
Alan enjoyed teaching 2nd grade CCD at St. Patrick’s Church and U-8 recreational soccer with Rutland Youth Soccer when his kids were younger. He was active with the Rutland Cub Scout Pack 141 as an Assistant Cubmaster and Den Leader and found a passion there. He enjoyed being the auctioneer at the Cake Auction and his sense of humor would really come out making up stories about each cake the scouts made. His quick witted one-liners really made people smile and laugh. His other passion was Mount Monadnock. Living in Jaffrey, NH the mountain was pretty much in his back yard. He loved learning the history of the mountain, reading about stories of the mountain, and sharing about interesting facts and places on the mountain. He loved taking the scout families up the mountain on their annual fall trip. He would visit the mountain multiple times during the year in all season – spring, summer, fall, and even loved winter climbs and started taking his own kids up the mountain walking on their own as young as the age of 4 to the top.
Along with the mountain, Alan loved watching moose. He would make annual trips up to Pittsburg, NH hiking and canoeing to find them in the woods. He shared his love of nature and hiking with his wife and children as often as he could. He realized that the most valuable life lessons he could teach his children were through experiencing the simple beauty of nature.
Alan’s favorite sporting teams were the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Raiders and San Antonio Spurs. He followed the Raiders since the dynasty in the 1970s and couldn’t help himself but to fill his fantasy football rosters with their players in hopes that this is their year. He also enjoyed watching Tim Duncan when he played for Wake Forest in NC and continued to follow him with the San Antonio Spurs.
We will also remember Alan for his love of Kingsley Amis (author), history, forts, light houses, and traveling. Alan had many interests and passions which sparked his conversations and interactions with others. He would find a connection with each person he met. Alan will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched and will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Alan’s family from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden.
