Biography
WORCESTER – Aileen Porter, a lifelong resident of Worcester, died peacefully on Sunday, January 21, 2018. She was 91 years old. She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, David Porter, and her sister, Phyllis Halfen. She leaves, her 95 year old sister, Eunice Kushman; her daughters, Candace Porter, PhD, and Sherry Porter Shamash; three granddaughters, Ayelet Steinberg, Daphna Shamash and Kineret Shamash; and her three great grandchildren, Oshri, Mili and Noa Steinberg. Aileen graduated from Commerce High School where she was known for her oratory skills reciting poetry and performing theatrical roles. She excelled academically and graduated as the valedictorian of her 1944 high school class. Aileen was blessed with a sharp wit, a wonderful sense of humor and she never hesitated to share her opinions regarding our current politics, especially with regard to Israel. Prior to her marriage, she worked for Jewish Social Services as a secretary. Later in life, as her husband’s partner, Aileen supported and encouraged him in business, sports and philanthropic endeavors. She was a fiercely independent woman who was well informed and a delightful conversationalist, but for whom solitude and self reliance were her first priority. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 1:30 PM, TUESDAY, JANUARY 23RD AT BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE OF 15 JAMESBURY DRIVE IN WORCESTER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME OF HOLDEN. Burial will follow at B’Nai Brith Cemetery in Worcester. Immediately following the interment service a Memorial Observance Reception will be held at the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester. A Minyan Service will be held at the conclusion of the reception. Memorial Observance will continue Wednesday, January 24th through Sunday, January 28th at the residence of Sherry and Rahim Shamash, 53 Montclair Drive, Manchester, CT 06042. Please omit flowers. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
