Biography
WORCESTER - Sumner Silver, age 95, passed away peacefully at his home with family on Friday, September 22, 2017.
Sumner was born December 12, 1921, in Worcester. He was the only child of Ida and Alexander Silver. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Berman) Silver, his two daughters Alexis J. Silver and her husband David J. Salloway of Worcester, Elizabeth (Laurie) Bertrand of Shrewsbury and three granddaughters, Ashley, Nicole and Danielle Bertrand.
Sumner was born and raised in Worcester and graduated South High School, Amherst College and Harvard Law School. He was one the founders of the law firm now known as Phillips, Silver, Talman, Aframe and Sinrich.
Sumner loved the practice of law and continued to work well into his nineties. Sumner was an active tennis player and golfer. He summered with his family on Cape Cod and enjoyed travelling the world. He played the piano and cello, was an avid photographer and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Sumner leaves a long legacy of philanthropic work within the Worcester Community along with his selfless devotion to the Worcester Jewish Community. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 25th in Congregation Beth Israel, 15 Jamesbury Drive, under the direction of Richard Perlman of Miles Funeral Home of Holden. Rabbi Valerie Cohen will officiate. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery, Worcester.
Immediately following the interment service, Memorial Observance will be held through 5:00 PM, with a Minyan Service at 4:30 PM, on Monday, September 25th at Salisbury West Clubhouse, 770 Salisbury Street, Worcester.
The family wishes to thank Congregation Beth Israel for allowing Temple Emanuel Sinai to use its building for the funeral service, while construction of their own Temple is underway.
