WEST YARMOUTH / WORCESTER - Shirley Lerner of West Yarmouth and formerly Worcester passed away unexpectedly on March 15, 2021 at her home at the age of 95. Born and raised in Worcester, she was the daughter of
Abraham and Dora (Aberman) Milman.
She attended Clark University and received her Master’s Degree in social work at Boston University School of Social Work. It was during her social work student assignment at Boston City Hospital where she met the love of her life, her late husband of 64 years, Dr. Saul Lerner, while he was a medical intern there. After they married, they moved to New York City where she worked as a medical social worker at Mount Sinai Hospital while Saul was in his residency.
After moving back to Worcester, together they raised two daughters. Family was the most important thing in her life. She was completely devoted to them. She traveled the world extensively, both accompanying Saul at medical conferences and with her family on cherished trips.
She enjoyed vegetable gardening at her Worcester home and was involved in various philanthropic organizations over the years. She and Saul retired to Cape Cod where they especially enjoyed spending time with their granddaughters. Becoming a great-grandmother was a particularly special joy in her later years.
She is survived and deeply missed by her daughters, Lenore Lerner of Worcester and Lisa Lerner Balegno and her husband, Sergio of Marstons Mills, her granddaughters Ashley Bronson of Boston and Rachel Holmgren and her husband, Paul of East Sandwich and their children Brooke and Chase. She was also blessed to have gained two more grandchildren, Jenna and Sam Balegno.
Private graveside services will be held at B’Nai B’rith Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
