Selma A. (Ankers) Barton

December 17, 1923 — April 28, 2005

NORTH BROOKFIELD – Selma A. (Ankers) Barton, 81 of North Brookfield and Dunedin, Florida, died Thursday, April 28, 2005 at UMASS Memorial Health Care in Worcester, following a long illness. She was the wife of Robert G. Barton, Sr., to whom she been married to for over 61 years.

Mrs. Barton was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Hatcher and Lillian (Baker) Ankers. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Robert G. Barton, Jr. and his wife Jeanne of West Boylston; a brother, E. Eugene Ankers of Virginia; a sister, Blanche Clark of Virginia; three grandchildren, Melissa McLaughlin of Rutland, Leah Barton, and Robert B. Barton both of Worcester; threee great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She grew up in Vienna, Virginia, graduating from Fairfax High School and Radford College. She resided in Holden from 1950 to 1977 when she moved to Lake Lashaway in North Brookfield. In 1982 she began “snowbirding” in Dunedin, Florida until this past year.

Mrs. Barton was the manager of the millwork department for Sawyer Lumber Company and Cherry Valley Building Supply, both in Worcester for over 25 years. She was avid gardener who loved flowers and was a member of the Spencer Garden Club. She had taught Sunday School for over 25 years at the First Congregational Church of Holden, and most recently was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Spencer. She enjoyed antiques of all types, was a member of the Worcester Dance Assembly, an avid bridge player, and was a member of the Lake Lashaway Sailing Club.

The memorial service for Mrs. Barton will be held on Tuesday, May 3, at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Spencer, 207 Main Street, Spencer. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours will be held at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, on Monday, from 4-7 p.m. Private burial will take place in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Massachusetts Chapter, 496 Connecticut Path, Framingham, MA 01701.
