RUTLAND – Sarah Joyce (Linton) Dolan, 91, beloved wife of the late Donald V. Dolan, Sr., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at the Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center. Born and raised in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Melvin and Mary (Flaherty) Linton.
Sarah was influenced by her father, a medical doctor, to become a nurse. She remembered watching him leave to make house calls in the middle of the night, willing to help patients no matter the time, the weather conditions, or how he himself was feeling. Joyce “admired his dedication to his patients and profession.” Inspired by her father and her strong faith, Joyce attended nursing school at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester and graduated in 1950. After graduation, Joyce held several different positions as a Registered Nurse, including school nurse for an elementary school, psychiatric nursing in Massachusetts, Florida, and Rhode Island, as well as a nurse at a residential boys’ rehabilitation school.
In addition to her nursing career, Joyce was crowned “Miss Dorchester” in 1946, traveled as a Mary Kay representative, and modeled for John Robert Powers.
Faith and family were first and foremost for Joyce. She was a devoted mother, raising six children together with her husband on the family farm. Joyce was a longtime and faithful member of St. Patrick’s Church in Rutland. In her spare time, she enjoyed baking and sewing along with watching nature shows and musicals.
She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her three sons, Donald V. Dolan, Jr. of Rutland, David W. Dolan and his wife, Rachel of Rutland, and James M. Dolan and his wife, Monique of Northbridge; her daughter, J. Marie Dumas of Vero Beach, FL; her brother, Melvin Linton and his wife, Carmen of Baltimore, MD; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her daughter Eileen Dolan and son Thomas Dolan.
A 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd at St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street, Rutland. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery in Rutland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick’s Church or to St Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
