STERLING – Robert D. Higgins, Sr., 70, died on Thursday, March 24, 2005, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center.
He leaves his wife of 53 years, Mary L. (Castaldo) Higgins; his three sons, Robert D. Higgins, Jr. of Delanson, New York, and Elizabeth Rivituso of Ravena, New York, Jim A. Higgins and his wife Susan J. of Holland, and Michael S. Higgins and Patricia Kenney of Sterling; two daughters, Linda C. Lemon and her husband Stephen J. of Rutland, Judy A. Higgins and Rick F. Eckhardt of Holden; his sister, Shirley Jones of Mattawn, NJ; 21 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was born in Parsons, Kansas, the son of Patrick and Annabell (Belsy) Higgins, and previously resided in Holden until moving to Sterling in 1977.
Mr. Higgins was a Production Manager at Lone Star in Littleton. For the last 5 years he worked as a custodian at the First Church in Sterling. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. He especially enjoyed spending time with his dogs.
The funeral for Mr. Higgins will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29, at the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Calling hours are at the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 28.
