Rita A. (Andrews) Early

WORCESTER – Rita A. (Andrews) Early, 89, of Housatonic Street, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, January 26, 2012. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Frank and Annie (Plaska) Andrews and lived in Worcester all of her life.
Rita’s husband of 49 years, City of Worcester Mayor Thomas J. Early, died in 1992. She is survived and will be sadly missed by her two sons, Kevin F. Early and his wife Carol of Shrewsbury, and Brian T. Early of Worcester and his fiancé Marie Soltys of Chicopee; two daughters, Anne Marie Curtis and her husband Michael of Worcester, and Mary Beth D’Auteuil of Worcester; nine grandchildren, Christine Machado, Kathleen Jones, Tara Leahy, Heather Trudeau, Colleen Polletta, Christopher Curtis, Lindsey Mitchell, and Matthew and Brendan D’Auteuil; 12 great grandchildren, Moira and Lauren Machado, Ryan Jones, Hannah and Ava Leahy, Isabella, Keegan, and Madeline Trudeau, Paige and Logan Curtis, and Savannah and Lillianna Mitchell; her sister-in-law and best friend, Anne T. Early of Worcester; as well as many nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
Rita was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a former board member of The Guild of Our Lady of Providence, a long time volunteer at St. Vincent Hospital, and a long time member of The Friday Afternoon Club, all in Worcester. She was also a member of the Lithuanian Naturalization Club and the Sacred Heart Academy Mother’s Guild.
In the 1970’s and 1980's, Rita was very active in her husband’s political career as a Worcester City Councilor and later as the Mayor of Worcester. She enjoyed spending summers with her family on the beaches of Cape Cod and will be remembered as the matriarch of her family.
A Funeral Mass for Rita will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 23 Fales Street, Worcester. Entombment in St. John’s Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Mayor Thomas J. Early Scholarship Fund, c/o City Treasurer’s Office, Worcester City Hall, 455 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01608. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
