Paul T. Mcdermott

HOLDEN – Paul T. McDermott, Sr., 67, of Holden, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Jewish Healthcare Center on Thursday, December 27, 2012, eight months after being stricken with glioblastoma. Paul was born in Worcester, son of John J. and Mabel (Maynard) McDermott.
Paul leaves his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara J. (Vania) McDermott; his son, Scott R. McDermott and his wife Jessica of Holden; a daughter-in-law, Kerry M. McDermott, a grandson, Raymond, both of Holden; a sister, Maureen Keating and her husband Thomas of Worcester; a sister-in-law, Janet Thompson and her husband Robert of Paxton; and several nieces and nephews. His son, Paul T. McDermott Jr., died in August of this year. Three brothers, John J. McDermott, Raymond A. McDermott, and Thomas P. McDermott predeceased him.
Paul was raised in the Grafton Hill section of Worcester and graduated from St. Stephen’s High School and later from Worcester Industrial Technical Institute. He served in the Air National Guard. He lived in Worcester for many years before moving to Holden twenty years ago.
Paul worked for LaVigne Press in Worcester for 38 years, working his way up through many positions including production, sales, and marketing before retiring in 2006 as vice president. He enjoyed walking with his friends at the Greendale YMCA in Worcester. He was an avid sports fan and followed all of the New England teams. He was a member the Grafton Hillers club and served on the Board of Directors of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association in Worcester. When his sons were young, Paul spent many years coaching and volunteering at Joe Schwartz little league in Worcester. More recently he enjoyed watching his grandson Ray at his many sports and activities. He liked to cook and was known for his excellent meatballs and chili.
Paul was a wonderful and devoted husband and father, and was so proud of his sons and grandson Ray. He loved the ocean and enjoyed spending time with his family at Hampton Beach. He was a good man with a kind heart and touched the lives of his many friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Jewish Heathcare Center for their wonderful and compassionate care of Paul.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 3, at St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. He will be laid to rest with his son at Grove Cemetery, Holden. In lieu of flowers, please enjoy dinner with your loved ones in memory of Paul.
