PAXTON – Ora M. (Harlow) Vokes, 95, formerly of Paxton, died Monday, July 4, 2005 in Radius Healthcare in Millbury after an illness.
Her husband, Thomas A. Vokes, died in 1984. She leaves two sons, Thomas Vokes of Melbourne, Florida and Leslie Vokes of Lemoine, Maine; two daughters, Ora Magnusson of Edgewater, Florida and Marilyn Bell of Sutton; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. A son, Stephen Vokes, predeceased her. She was born in Lynn the daughter of Leslie and Clarice (Farwell) Harlow and lived in the Worcester County area for many years.
Mrs. Vokes graduated from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and later received a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Assumption College in Worcester. She started her career as a fashion illustrator for several local Worcester stores and later worked as a finish artist for Forbes and Wallace in Springfield. In 1959, Mrs. Vokes began her teaching career as an art teacher at Lamartine Street Elementary School and later at both Providence Street and Forest Grove Junior High Schools all in Worcester, retiring in 1971. After her retirement, Mrs. Vokes continued her love and passion for her profession by continuing to practice substitute teaching well into her 80’s. She was a member of the Massachusetts Retired Teacher’s Association and was a Past Worthy Matron of the Clara Barton Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Oxford.
The funeral service for Mrs. Vokes will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, in the First Congregational Church of Paxton, 1 Church Street, Paxton. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc., P.O.
