Life Legacy

LEDGEWOOD, NJ/HOLDEN – Joseph T. Whitmore, 92, of Quinapoxet Street, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, October 22, 2016. He was born in Dover, NJ, the son of Ellsworth C. and Ethel (Reardon) Whitmore and had lived most of his life in New Jersey and Florida before moving to Holden in 2011.Joseph graduated from Wharton High School in Wharton, NJ before enlisting into the service in 1943. He was a sergeant in the Army Air Force serving with the 460th Bomb Group, Fifteenth Air Force in Spinazzola, Italy until 1945. Joseph was a banker for 31 years working as a cashier and vice president at the National Community Bank in Dover, NJ. He retired as executive vice president in the mortgage department at the National Community Bank of New Jersey in Lodi, NJ.He was a member the American Legion for over 70 years and a former member and past commander of the William J. Hocking American Legion Post 91 in Wharton, NJ. He was a past president of the Morris County Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and was past president of the Dover Lion’s Club. Joseph was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 55 years, was a former member and treasurer of St. Theresa’s Church in Succasunna, NJ, and was a current member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson. Joseph enjoyed watching baseball and loved listening, whistling and dancing to music of the Big Band Era, Broadway Show tunes and the Malt Shop Oldies. His loving wife of 58 years, Antonette V. (Volpe) Whitmore, passed away in 2012. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his daughter, Nancy Erali and her husband, Christopher of Jefferson; two grandchildren, Natalie Daigle and her husband, Anthony of Ipswich and Jessica Milazzo and her husband, Mark of Las Vegas, NV; and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Marion Goldsworthy and a brother, James Whitmore predeceased him.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. A committal service with military honors will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
