HOLDEN – Homer W. Griffith, 80, of Oregon Trail, passed away peacefully at home under the loving care of his family on Thursday, February 23, 2012 after a short illness. He was born in Plymouth, son of Homer F. and Tekla (Halunen) Griffith.
Homer was raised in Worcester, graduated North High School and lived in Holden for 60 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was trained as a dental technician graduating first in his class from boot camp. For 20 years, he owned and operated Griffith Dental Laboratories in Worcester retiring in 1995. A passionate golfer, he was a member of Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston and a former member of Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton, achieving two holes-in-one: one at Pleasant Valley and the second at Juniper Hills Country Club in Northborough. He enjoyed reading, cooking and was an avid New England sports fan.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Joyce H. (Chappelear) Griffith, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on March 15th; his four sons, Michael W. Griffith and his wife Leah of Port Charlotte, Florida, James B. Griffith of West Boylston, Daniel F. Griffith of Worcester, and Thomas A. Griffith and his wife Cheryl of Holden; his daughter, Cheryl Lynn Durling and her husband Michael of Naples, Maine; a sister, Hope E. Kirby and her husband Robert of Freedom, New Hampshire; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three nephews. Two brothers, Howard A. and Harrison P. Griffith, predeceased him.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 2, in the chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations in Homer’s memory may be made to VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608-1280; or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
