STERLING – Ena T. (Tillson) Irving, 97, of Maple Street, died Monday, January 5, 2009 in the Sterling Healthcare Center, Sterling, after an illness.
Her husband, Elmer W. Irving, died in 1991. She leaves a brother, Charles Tillson of Florida; a dear friend and caregiver, Mary E. Nourse of Sterling; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Chloe Hart of Millis who died in 1996, and her brother, Captain Robert C. Tillson who died in action during World War II.
Ena was born in West Newbury, daughter of C. Burritt and Georgena (Johnson) Tillson, was raised in Wayland and lived in Natick before moving to Sterling in 1973. She was a graduate of Wayland High School and the Sargent School at Boston University where she received a Master's Degree in 1933.
Ena was a Physical Education Teacher for Natick High School, retiring in 1969. She was a member of the First Church in Sterling and its Loyal Group, and a member of the Sterling Senior Citizens. With her husband, she would sell strawberries from their Rugg Road and Maple Street homes in Sterling. She also loved to knit and was an avid Red Sox fan.
The staff at the Sterling Healthcare Center provided Ena wonderful care and support for many years.
A memorial service for Ena will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 11th, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. Private burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road, Sterling. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to the Sterling Healthcare Center, Patient Activities Fund, 18 Dana Hill Road, Sterling, MA 01564.
