WORCESTER - Ellen (Sussman) Meyers, 68, passed away peacefully under the loving care of her husband, family, friends, and the compassionate staff at Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester on Friday, February 1, 2019. Born in Merrick, New York, Ellen was the daughter of the late Richard and Lois (Pasternak) Sussman and lived 30 years in Worcester.
Ellen graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and later received master degrees from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York and Worcester State College. After training in special education in Cleveland, Ellen held various positions at Shrewsbury High School, and retired in 2008 as director of special education for the Town of Shrewsbury school department, where she worked for over 25 years. After her retirement, Ellen worked at The Bridge for 10 years as a principal/consultant. She was a board member of the Tourette Association of America and spoke nationally on their behalf. She was a member and two-term President of Temple Emanuel in Worcester.
Ellen was a woman of great faith and cherished time spent with her husband and family. She remained steadfast to her principles and stood for what was best for her family and students...always remaining a strong advocate for what was right. Ellen deeply valued relationships with her students, who still reach out years later to check on her and stay in touch. Besides her never ending willingness to help others, Ellen found time to attend Ice Cats/Sharks Games as season ticket holder with her husband, and go on well-deserved cruises and visit her happy place, the Mexican Riviera.
The last chapter of Ellen's life showcased her strength, compassion, and how at peace she was with her family by her side. Ellen’s family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Daniel Morganstern and the staff at Dana Farber Institute, and the Starling Medical Group in Wethersfield, CT and the care team at Rose Monahan Hospice Home for their exceptional care and compassion.
She will be affectionately remembered and missed by her husband of 30 years, David A. Meyers, her son, Eric and husband, Owen Tashlin of Maine; a brother, Steven Sussman and wife, Ilene of Roslyn, New York and Steve’s children, Jennifer Sussman and Lori Gandy; a sister in law, Diane Doerfler and her husband, Len of Shrewsbury and their children, Jessica and Steven Doerfler; her stepmother, Barbara Andrews of Palm Beach, FL; and several cousins.
