WEST BOYLSTON – David Paul DeVries, 72, passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Born in Endicott, NY, and raised in Holden, he was the son of Merril and Jean (Baxter) DeVries and lived in West Boylston since 1974.
David graduated from Wachusett Regional High School with the Class of 1967, and from Becker Junior College in 1971, where he met his bride of 49 years, Carolyn Morse. In addition to his wife, David leaves behind a wonderful son, Daniel Robert; his nieces, Lisa, wife of Brian Ghio, Donna Olmstead of New Hampshire, a sister-in-law, Lorraine Morse of Cape Cod; Lorraine’s daughters, Allyson, wife of the late Curtis Lawson of Cambridge, and Meredith, wife of David Sweet of Pennsylvania; his grand-nephews, Dylan Martin, Devin Olmstead and Jonathan Sweet; grand-nieces Dayna-Elaine Olmstead and Sophia Sweet. He is predeceased by his parents, Merril and Jean DeVries, a sister, Judith Elaine, and her husband, Donald Kehoe.
David spent a career in the hospitality and service industry, serving as a manager at Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge in West Boylston, Worcester and Cheektowaga (Buffalo), NY, the Driftwood Motor Lodge and Restaurant in Shrewsbury and the Baymont Inn in Auburn. He also served as a Managing Director at Lincoln Plaza Cinemas in Worcester and Showcase 1-10 in West Springfield. Before retiring, he was the payroll clerk for the Salvation Army ARC in Worcester.
He was a life-long aficionado of Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas and a member of the New England Gilbert and Sullivan Society (NEGASS) where he served as editor and chief of their bi-monthly newsletter, The Trumpet Bray, for several years.
As a youth, he was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and as an adult, a member of Adams Square Baptist Church where he served in several capacities including moderator, treasurer and deacon. At the time of his passing, he was a member of The Chapel on the Hill in Shrewsbury.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to Chapel on the Hill Attention: Marla Collins, 145 Memorial Dr., Shrewsbury, MA 01545. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
