WORCESTER – Sylvia “Sip” (Garber) Webman, 103, died peacefully Wednesday, October 25, 2023, after a period of declining health, a valiant fight, and a lengthy hospital stay.
Born in Bialystok, Poland, Sip was the daughter of Paul and Sarah (Schulte) Garber and was raised in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was fiercely proud of and loved her family, including her brothers Aaron and Irving, and sister Goldie. The family bond was evidenced by the many times she and her husband, J. Burnell “Bernie” Webman, vacationed with them and their spouses. She often highlighted the importance of spending time with family, encouraging family love and harmony amongst her extended family, which was a joy and strong theme of her life, along with the importance of her Jewish religion.
After graduating Salem State Teachers College [now University], Sip managed the office and accounting for a leather manufacturing company. After World War II, she and Bernie married and then, after he completed college, moved to Worcester where they raised their family of four children, Donna, Wendy, Robert, and Susan. When Susan was a senior in high school, Sip began a 20+ year career teaching business subjects at South High and then South High Community School. She was weeks shy of her 80th birthday when she retired. Post retirement, she continued to be an active member of the community, attending Congregation Beth Israel where she and her family had been active members starting in the 1950s.
Sip will be lovingly missed and remembered by her son Robert and his wife Juana; daughter, Susan Webman and her husband, Larry Gottesman; her 8 cherished grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, the most recent born a month ago, and all her extended family. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernie, and her daughters, Donna Webman and Wendy Lonsdale.
Family and friends will gather for Sip's funeral service at 11:30 AM Friday, October 27th at Congregation Beth Israel, 15 Jamesbury Drive, Worcester. Family will be at the Congregation some time before that to see friends and family. Interment will follow at Pride of Lynn Cemetery, 89 Lakeshore Road, Lynn, MA. Memorial Observance will be announced. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
