DELRAY BEACH, FL - Robert "Bob" Goldsmith, born on July 23, 1936, passed away on October 7, 2024, in Delray Beach, Florida, at the age of 88. Born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, Bob was the son of Louis and Jean (Steinberg) Goldsmith.
Bob met his lifelong sweetheart, Diane, while they were both attending Classical High School in Worcester, and the two were married for 66 years. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from UCLA and later returned to California to obtain his Master's in Public Administration during his distinguished 30+ year career with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Bob's career took him from New England to Bowie, Maryland, where he spent nearly 18 years working in the IRS national office. He later returned to his New England roots to serve as Chief of Collection for the Boston Region of the IRS.
Following his retirement from the IRS, Bob established his own practice, representing individuals and businesses in matters before the IRS. He and Diane raised their three children, Larry, Russell, and Lori, first in Bowie and later in Londonderry, New Hampshire, where they built a home and lived for 25 years before moving full-time to Delray Beach.
A devoted New Englander at heart and a die-hard Red Sox fan, Bob often spoke of returning to Boston in his final days. He will, in fact, return home to be laid to rest.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Diane, and their children: Larry Goldsmith of Seattle, Washington; Russell Goldsmith and his wife, Michelle, of York Harbor, Maine; and Lori Smith and her husband, Adam, of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Jason Smith, Ethan Smith, Corinne Goldsmith, and Amanda Goldsmith. In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his sister, Ina Shaw.
A graveside service will be held at 3 pm on Thursday, October 10, at Chevra Kadisha/Holy Society Cemetery, Havana Road, Leicester. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
