John F. Kane

RUTLAND – John F. Kane, 74, of 1 Christmas Tree Lane, died Saturday, December 31, 2005 in his home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 47 years, Ila (Sundin) Kane; two sons, James Kane and his wife Lynn of West Springfield and Thomas Kane and his fiancé Joan Chen of Westford; a daughter, Patricia Hicks and her husband Andrew of Holden; three grandchildren, Kathryn and Michael Kane and Megan Hicks; an aunt, Helen Lambutis of Holden; and many cousins. A daughter, Mary-Ellen Dingley died in 2001. He was born in Worcester the son of Walter and Mary C. (Shea) Kane and lived 47 years in Rutland.

Mr. Kane received a Bachelor’s Degree from Worcester State College and Masters Degree’s from Worcester State College, University of Notre Dame, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Anna Maria College. He was a Mathematics and Business Professor at Anna Maria College for 25 years. Previously, he was a high school teacher and taught in Charlton, West Boylston, Hull and Wachusett Regional High Schools. Mr. Kane also owned and operated Jack’s Trains Hobby Shop in Rutland for many years.

He was a member of the Rutland Planning Board, Rutland Finance Committee, Wachusett Regional School Committee and served as the Rutland Town Moderator for 28 years. He was a member St. Patrick’s Church in Rutland, National Education Association, Rutland American Legion Post 310 and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

The funeral for Mr. Kane will be held on Wednesday, January 4 from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St.(Rte 122A), Holden with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main St., Rutland. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue, Paxton. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3 in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA Care Network Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608, or Rutland Fire Brigade Rescue Fund, 240 Main St., Rutland, MA 01543
