PRINCETON – Leo William Ollila, 90, of 10 Mountain Road, and of Farmington, N.H., died peacefully at home on Sunday, December 17, 2006, after a long illesss.
He leaves his wife of 65 years, Marjorie P. (Peck) Ollila; twin daughters, Sandra E. Morrison of Lexington and Susan A. Ollila of New York; a son, Paul W. Ollila of Rutland; four grandchildren, James Morrison and his wife Julie, Sean Morrison, Thomas Ollila and Anne Ollila; three great-grandchildren, Lily, Patrick and Christopher Morrison; two sisters, Gertrude Hohmann of Illinois and Marian Steinmetz of California; many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Paul and Carl Ollila, and a sister, Elizabeth Crane, predeceased him.
Leo was born in Negaunee, Michigan on May 31, 1916, one of six children of Alfred and Aliina (Niemi) Ollila. He attended schools in Negaunee where in high school, he played varsity basketball. He worked as a butcher and store clerk in his older brother’s grocery store after graduation to earn enough money to enroll in Michigan Technological University where he earned a BS degree in metallurgical engineering in 1941. He was elected to honor societies, Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Sigma Mu. Post graduate studies included the AMP program at Harvard Business School. He had a long and distinguished career. He joined Wyman-Gordon in 1942 as a metallurgist and subsequently held various metallurgical and management positions, retiring as Vice President and Technical Director of the company. He had significant responsibility in the metallurgical transition from piston engine forgings to those for jet engines. During his long tenure, he gained an industry-wide reputation for being a creative and innovative metallurgist and an astute and wise manager.
His most enjoyable work years were when he was President and Chairman of the Board of Luvak, Inc. an analytical testing laboratory. Along with Marjorie, his wife of 65 years, he purchased the company in 1965. Together they built a business that enjoys an international reputation. He served as President until the time of his death and was proud to note that Luvak, Inc. with its excellent staff and equipment has a prominent position in the analytical laboratory industry. He was also a member of the Oxford Lodge of Masons and the First United Methodist Church of Rochester, NH.
Leo was a man of Christian Faith. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 22, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers.
