HOLDEN – Leo R. Bachant, 69, of 45 South Wachusett Street, was stricken ill at home and died on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 46 years, Sheila A. (MacLean) Bachant; three sons, Christopher L. Bachant and his wife Mary of Waterford, Connecticut, David A. Bachant and his wife Brenda of Rutland, and Daniel P. Bachant and his wife Robin of Fitchburg; his daughter, Liane M. Jalette and her husband Robert of Chepachet, Rhode Island; a sister, Kathleen A. MacIntyre of Douglas; nine grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Leo P. and Catherine R. (Grace) Bachant, was raised in Millbury before moving to Holden in 1960. He was a graduate of Millbury High School, received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Fitchburg State College, a Master’s degree in Administration from Worcester State College and completed a C.A.G.S. (Certificate Above Graduate Studies) from Fitchburg State College. He served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for 29 years, retiring as a Major.
Mr. Bachant began his 35-year teaching career in 1959 at Wachusett Regional High School as an industrial arts teacher. He created and taught in the Industrial Arts Department at Clinton High School. He served as Assistant Principal at Clinton Middle School and later as Assistant Principal of Clinton High School for over 20 years, retiring in 1994. After his retirement, he owned and operated L&S Creations of Holden. He was a life member of the Mass. Teachers Association, the Mass. Secondary School Principals Association, Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association and an over a 40-year member of the Central Mass. Conference of Football Officials. In 1985 he received the Outstanding Assistant Principal Award for the State of Massachusetts by the Mass. Secondary School Principals Association. He enjoyed community affairs and was a former member of the Holden Finance and Holden Public Safety Building Committees. He was a member of St. George’s Church and a life member and trustee of the Elks Lodge Post 1306 in Clinton.
The funeral for Mr. Bachant will be held on Monday, December 4, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Calling hours are from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, in the funeral home.
