WEST BOYLSTON – After an extended period of declining health, Phyllis K. (Kemp) Webster, passed away at Jewish Healthcare Center of Worcester on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, 14 days shy of her 99th birthday.
She was the 9th child of Fred J. and Ethel G. (Tracey) Kemp of Worcester. Older siblings, John, Eva, Fred Jr., Olive, Pearl, Gladys, Charles and Richard were eager to greet their new sister. Three years later, another brother, James arrived and three years later sister, Betty arrived to complete the Kemp family at “552” as their home was affectionately called. Phyllis grew up during the Great Depression and at an early age learned never to waste and to appreciate the value of every penny.
Phyllis met the love of her life, Dan Webster, while attending Worcester’s Wesley United Methodist Church. After Dan returned from serving his country during World War II, Phyllis and Dan were married in November of 1945 and spent 47 happy years together before Dan passed in 1992. The Webster family moved to West Boylston in 1956. Phyllis had a varied career as secretary to Pearl K. McGown, executive secretary at Astra Pharmaceutical, volunteered at West Boylston schools and West Boylston Library, care taker of children and an active member of the First Congregational Church of West Boylston. Phyllis loved to hike, walk dogs, exercise and take care of her gardens at home. During quiet times, she had a love of reading and of music.
In addition to her husband Dan, Phyllis was predeceased by all 10 of her siblings. She leaves three children, Martha and her husband, Thom of Bar Harbor, ME, Janet and her husband, Rick of Acton and Tom and his wife, Tricia of Lancaster, United Kingdom; her grandchildren, Rebecca, Lia, May and Lili; her great granddaughter, Ronin; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves the entire staff at the Jewish Healthcare Center who lovingly saw to her care during the past seven years.
According to Phyllis’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of West Boylston, 26 Central Street, West Boylston, MA 01583, or Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling.
