Carl B. Martin Iii

March 19, 1943 — January 14, 2015

RUTLAND - Carl B. Martin, III, 71, of Rutland passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 in his home surrounded by his family after a difficult battle with cancer. Born in Springfield, he was the youngest child of Carl B Martin, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Martin. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol (Rissberger) Martin; his children Melissa (Martin) Springer and her husband Kris of Wilbraham, Laura Martin and her husband Daniel Brown of Walpole, Carl B. Martin, IV of Center Ossipee, NH; his four grandchildren Ethan, Sarah, Olivia, and Raymond. Carl was the devoted brother of Deborah Grabner of North Falmouth, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Carl grew up in Wilbraham, where he graduated from Wilbraham Academy in 1961. He attended the University of Vermont where he played varsity baseball, highlighted by his two 1-hitters against URI and UConn. In 1964 Carl married Carol Rissberger (UVM ’64) in Albany, NY and went on to graduate from UVM with a B.S. in Economics. Upon graduation Carl worked at Worcester County National Bank where he rose to Vice President. In 1980 Carl chose to enter the family business, Martin Millwork Inc., in Springfield. As owner, he grew the small millwork distributor into one of the largest Andersen Window distributors in New England when, at the age of 60, he decided to sell the company, retire and play more golf.

Carl will be remembered as a very generous, loyal and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. For years he was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holden where he served as Treasurer, Pleasant Valley Country, and Springfield Rotary where he received their highest award, The Paul Harris Award. Carl was also a member of First Congregational Church of Holden, Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club in Palm City, FL and Indian Mound Golf Club in Center Ossipee, NH.

His family will miss the vacations to Maui and the many wonderful times they all shared together celebrating his anniversaries. His friends will miss his unique sense of humor and competitiveness on and off the golf course. But mostly we all will miss his quiet loving nature and his generous giving spirit in our lives.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Carl's family from 12 to 2 p.m. on Monday, January 19, in the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main Street, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. celebrating his life. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Carl may be made to the Celebrate Life Cancer Survivor Network (CLCSN), P.O. Box 488, West Ossipee, NH 03890-0488; or to the First Congregational Church, 1180 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
