HOLDEN -- Professor George A. Doyle, 89, of Holden died on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Worcester.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Henry and Gertrude Doyle, he lived in Holden. He was the husband of Theresa (Morin) Doyle and the late Elise (Sullivan) Doyle.
For forty years, Dr. Doyle was a professor of economics and foreign affairs at Assumption College. In addition, he taught at Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 1973 to 1975, University of Zambia in Lusaka, Zambia from 1980 to 1981, and Shanghai International Studies University in Shanghai, China from 1988 to 1989. From 1953 to 1961, he was an international economist and research director with the Central Intelligence Agency. Dr. Doyle served as an adviser to U.S. Senators Hubert Humphrey and John Kerry and authored numerous position papers and bills for the Senators, the Joint Economic Committee of Congress and the Agency for International Development of the State Department. After Senator Humphrey’s passing, Professor Doyle met with President Jimmy Carter in the White House to explain one of the late Senator’s final bills. He also served on the Massachusetts Governor’s Foreign Trade Council. He was appointed to the New England Regional Export Expansion Council by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and was the Director of the National Science Foundation Institutes in Economics and the Economic Research and Analysis Group.
Professor Doyle earned a Bachelor of Social Science degree from St. John’s University, a Master of Arts degree in History from Niagara University, a Ph.D in Economics from Fordham University and he received an honorary Doctor of Human Letters from Assumption College in 1992. He also studied at Harvard Graduate School of Business and was a Ford Foundation Fellow at Brown University. Professor Doyle was Associate Editor of the Bentley Business and Economic Review and member of the editorial advisory representatives of the “Journal of Economic Studies.” Although he published many articles and delivered many lectures in topics ranging from the international monetary policy to the expansion of export development and from the Soviet Union to international trade, his last publication, “The River of Life” was his favorite. Professor Doyle’s languages included French, Latin, German and Russian.
During World War II, Professor Doyle served as a platoon leader and battery commander in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific where his largest command was 900 men. He retired from the Marine Reserves as a Major in 1963.
Besides his wife, he leaves eight children: Agnes Gootee of Seaford, VA; Denise Hughes of Birmingham, AL; Mary Williams of Delray Beach, FL and Warren, VT; Dr. Therese Grattan of Westborough, MA; Dr. Robert Doyle of Franklin, MA; Colette Doyle of Newton, MA; Monique Doyle Spencer of Brookline, MA; and Francis X. Doyle of Jefferson, MA and one sister, Audrey Ziccardy of Port St. Lucie, FL. His brother was the late, Robert F. Doyle. He also leaves 21 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Professor Doyle will be held on Wednesday, April 25, from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. The family suggests that donations may be made to the George A.
